Urban and Regional Planning Professor Emerita Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr Petra Doan Headshot 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Urban and regional planning

Urban and Regional Planning Professor Emerita Petra Doan received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florida American Planning Association’s (APA) annual conference on September 9, 2022.

Dr. Doan received the award for the substantial contributions she made to the field, notably in urban planning for LGBTQ+ communities, over her 33-year career with FSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP).

“Dr. Petra Doan is an amazing scholar and mentor to students and faculty,” said Tim Chapin, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. “It’s really wonderful to see her hard work and dedication recognized by the APA with this prestigious award.”

APA Executive Committee President Wiatt Bowers expressed that Dr. Doan’s work with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning’s Faculty Women’s Interest Group and Global Planning Educators Network had a tremendous influence on leadership in planning education and pathbreaking research on planning for queer communities.

The award was accepted on Dr. Doan’s behalf by DURP alum Bob Cambric who recognized her contributions as a scholar, mentor, and advocate during her career.

Alongside her work in education, Dr. Doan’s groundbreaking research about planning for queer communities provided other scholars with the necessary frameworks for understanding and improving the well-being of community members.
