Faculty Awarded for Research, Scholarship

March 6, 2019

Two faculty members in the college were recently awarded for their research and for the body of their work throughout their careers.

William Berry, the Syde P. Deeb Eminent Scholar and Marian D. Irish Professor of Political Science, is the 2019 recipient of the Career Achievement Award from the State Politics and Policy Section of American Political Science Association.

The award will be presented at the organization's State Politics and Policy Conference at the University of Maryland in June in recognition of his important contributions to the study of state politics.

"Bill's contributions to state politics research and mentorship are large," said Department of Political Science Chair Charles Barrilleaux. "It is a greatly deserved recognition."

Berry joined the faculty at FSU in 1990.

Professor of Sociology Koji Ueno has received the Social Science Research Council's Abe Fellowship, designed to encourage international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern.

The fellowship will support his research project, Sexual Minority Young Adults’ Career Planning Process in the US and Japan.

The project will examine how structural and cultural contexts impact the career planning process among sexual minorities by building on Ueno's ongoing in-depth interview study with sexual minority young adults in the US and Japan.

The Abe Fellowship program seeks to foster the development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-relevant topics of long-range importance and who are willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics. It strives especially to promote a new level of intellectual cooperation between the Japanese and American academic and professional communities committed to and trained for advancing global understanding and problem solving.

Ueno joined the faculty in 2004 after completing his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University.
