Local Organizations Supporting Aging-In-Place: What Can We Learn?

Tuesday, September 11, 2018
5:30-6:30 p.m.
Backwoods Bistro
401 E. Tennessee St., Tallahassee
(corner of Gadsden St.)

In Kerala, India, the Elderly Inclusion Program makes it easier for people to age well in community and for families to support and care for their elders. Kerala outpaces the rest of India in the growth of its population over 65 years of age and has given rise to a number of innovative approaches to this new group in need of support. A core feature is a community network of Elderly Neighborhood Groups (NHGs) that is place-based, with 10 to 20 members per group.

Emerita Professor Rebecca Miles examines the aspects of the political, historical, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts that help make the Elderly Inclusion Program work well in Kerala, and explores how it might need to be adapted to be useful in other places and what we can learn locally and in the U.S. from their experience.

Miles spent seven months in Kerala in 2016-2017, based at the Center for Development Studies in Thiruvananthapuram, supported by a Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Research Award.

Rebecca Miles was on the faculty at FSU for nearly 30 years, 25 of them in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, until her retirement this summer. She has also been an affiliate at the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, where her work focused on neighborhoods and health; rapid urbanization and aging populations; planning and public health, safety, and well-being; development and social policy.

Policy Pubs take place in the relaxed social atmosphere of Backwoods Bistro at the corner of Tennessee and Gadsden streets. Guests can enjoy food and drink from the menu while listening to and talking about the evening’s topic. Because these events are very well attended, the public is encouraged to arrive early to get a good parking spot in the restaurant’s lot or surrounding streets and a good table inside.

The series takes place on the second Tuesdays of the first three months of the fall semester: September 11, October 9, November 13.
