Planning Chair Appointed Associate Dean

Professor of Urban & Regional Planning Jeff Brown has been named Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, Dean Tim Chapin announced April 9.

Starting in May 2020, Brown will lead efforts related to advancing the college’s strategic plan, overseeing program reviews and accreditations and working with unit faculty, staff and administrators as they pursue their own strategic initiatives.

Brown earned his Ph.D. in urban planning from UCLA in 2003 and joined the FSU faculty that same year. He has served as chair of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning since July 2014, and he will continue in that position while serving as associate dean.

In addition to authoring or co-authoring more than 60 scholarly publications, he has been part of numerous multidisciplinary teams that have received more than $6 million in funding from federal, state and other agencies.

“Dr. Brown has a long and impressive track record as a scholar, teacher, program administrator and grant getter,” Chapin said. “I am thrilled to welcome him to the college’s leadership team.”

Within Florida State University, Brown has been a member of the Chairs and Deans Advisory Council within the Office of the Vice President for Faculty Development and Advancement and served on several key university hiring committees. He has been a regular presenter at events designed to support the work of department chairs and associate deans.

He is also a ten-time nominee for the University Graduate Teaching Award.

Beyond FSU, he has served as on several committees for the Transportation Research Board, Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and the American Planning Association.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity to support the missions of the university, the college and our departments, programs and centers,” Brown said. “I’m looking forward to working with faculty, staff and administrators to build on our traditions of excellence and position ourselves for success as a preeminent venue for social science and public policy research, teaching and service.”
