Jill Quadagno Honored at Retirement Reception

Jill Quadagno, the Mildred and Claude Pepper Eminent Scholar in Social Gerontology and professor of sociology, was honored April 8, 2015, by faculty, university administration, friends and colleagues at a reception to mark her retirement.

The event at the Pearl Tyner House included several speakers-- FSU President John Thrasher, COSSPP Dean David Rasmussen, former department chair Pat Martin, and former student Ben Kail--who spoke of Professor Quadagno's many achievements and contributions to the university.

Dr. Quadagno has been a highly valued member of the faculty since 1987, an internationally recognized expert and advisor to several U.S. presidents on the issue of health care and other public policy matters, and a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

President Thrasher also noted that she is a prolific researcher who has contributed greatly to the field of sociology, receiving well over a half a million dollars in state, federal and university grants to advance her work. She has chaired several professional associations and served as editor of academic journals. But she expressed her greatest sense of achievement when she was awarded the University Distinguished Teacher Award in 2011:

“Ultimately, I judge my own success by the success of my students, and I can think of no higher praise than to be considered a good teacher.”
