Major Requirements

International Affairs

Total hours: Students must complete 39 credit hours of coursework beyond liberal studies requirements or the AA degree. At least 18 of the total hours for the major must be numbered 3000 and above. INS 3003: Introduction to International Affairs is required. The remaining 36 credit hours are to be earned by taking approved coursework in a minimum of 3 participating departments. No more than 18 credit hours can be taken in one department. The participating departments include:

  • Geography
  • History
  • Modern Languages
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Public Administration
  • Religion
  • Sociology
  • Urban and Regional Planning

Approved Course List: All courses counted towards the major must come from the approved list of courses. A list is compiled each semester which reflects actual course offerings in each term. You can see the master list of approved courses on the FSU General Bulletin (https://registrar.fsu.edu/bulletin/undergraduate), although these will not include new or special topics courses. For the semester-specific approved course list, please contact the International Affairs undergraduate Academic Program Specialist.

Departmental Concentration: Within the thirty-nine (39) required credits, students must take a minimum of twelve (12) credits in one department. No more than eighteen (18) credits will be allowed in one department. Students can have more than one concentration.

Modern Foreign Language Requirement: Majors must complete modern foreign language coursework to the intermediate level (2220 or equivalent course) or demonstrate intermediate proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking a modern foreign language. Any credit hours taken to meet this requirement do not count towards the 39 credit hours required to complete the major.

Grade/GPA: Students must earn a C- grade or higher in each course and an overall 2.0 major GPA.

Credit Limitations: A maximum combined total of twelve (12) credits in internship, directed individualized study or honors thesis credits may count towards the major.

Second majors: Up to six (6) credits may overlap between two majors.
