The Florida State University Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) is Florida’s oldest and largest graduate planning program. Founded in 1965, DURP has been a leader in planning education for decades and shaped planning practice in a state internationally known for innovations in the areas of comprehensive planning, emergency management, land conservation, urban design, public health, and the transportation-land use nexus.
DURP is made up of a nationally recognized faculty of twelve scholars/practitioners and is home to roughly 100 master’s students, 20 doctoral students, and 50 undergraduates in our minor and combined degree programs. The program’s alumni number over 1,500 and are employed in almost every state in the nation and thirty countries outside of the United States. We have excellent professional and academic placement results for our master’s and doctoral graduates.
The Department offers graduate degree programs at the master’s and doctoral levels and an undergraduate minor. We teach specialized courses in the following:
- Environmental Planning
- Neighborhood Planning and Community Design
- Planning for Developing Areas
- Transportation Planning
- Real Estate and Economic Development
We also offer joint master’s degree programs with six other departments at FSU that train professionals to work in positions at the nexus of their component professions. And, we offer international graduate student study abroad opportunities through our partnerships with the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the University of Aalborg in Denmark that allow DURP students to study at those institutions during their time in our program.
The Department’s faculty and students conduct research in the areas including but not limited to:
