Tom McCaleb earned a B.A. with Distinction in Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, an M.A. in economics from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge, and the Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining the faculty at Florida State, he was on the faculties at the University of Kansas and Rice University and has also taught at the University of Houston, the University of California-Irvine, and the FSU College of Law. In addition to his academic experience, he was Senior Staff Economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at FSU.
He currently teaches Principles of Microeconomics, Economics of State and Local Government, and Economics and the Law. He has won University teaching and advising awards and is a recipient of the Kenneth Elzinga Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association. His research interests are in the economics of tax policy and in public choice. Most recently, he has been engaged in research on child support guidelines under contract with the Florida Legislature.
He has three adult children. Tom is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a Rhodes Scholar, and a management consultant based in Miami. John, a graduate of the University of North Florida, has an M.B.A. from North Carolina State University and is in construction and property development in Sanford, N.C. David is a University of North Carolina graduate in economics and Russian Studies (“If God isn’t a Tarheel, why is the sky Carolina Blue?”), studied Russian language at Moscow State University, and has an M.A. in International Trade and Investment Policy from The George Washington University. He is a marketing accounts manager with an international trade consultancy in Seattle. Dr. McCaleb enjoys domestic and foreign travel with his wife, Lynda. He is a Florida Swimming official, and for recreation he swims (slowly) and lifts weights (lightly).
